guitar and an Internet connection. AcousticGuitarSchool.com brings the rest to you!
Dear Aspiring Guitarist:
The acoustic guitar is, without question, the most versatile and fun musical instrument that you
can learn to play. Whether you like rock or country, blues or jazz - whether you want to play at parties,
coffee houses, and bars, or just at home or around the campfire, there is nothing quite as satisfying
as picking up your guitar and playing your favorite music.
But I don't have to tell you that. You wouldn't have
found this website if you weren't already interested in learning to play acoustic guitar or interested in becoming a
better player.
You want to play acoustic guitar and you want to play
well. Maybe you have freinds who play. Or maybe you used to play, but gave up a long time ago.
Whatever your particular circumstances might be, you know that it's time to stop thinking about playing guitar and
actually learn to play.
So what's holding you
back? There are actually a lot of common misconceptions
that keep people from reaching their goals with guitar - even though they've wanted to play for
years. Do any of these sound familiar?
"I don't have any musical
talent..."
"I don't have time to learn how to
play acoustic guitar..."
"Learning to play a musical
instrument is too hard..."
"I don't know how to read
music..."
"I don't have the patience for
complicated music theory..."
"Guitar lessons are too
expensive..."
"I've tried to learn guitar online, but it just doesn't come
together..."
The list really goes on and on. But let's take a closer look at all of these
misconceptions...
"I don't have any musical
talent..."
Let's think about what talent really is. A
common dictionary definition might be something like "talent - n. a special natural ability or
aptitude: a talent for drawing."
I don't buy this for a minute. I don't know
whether or not some people have a natural aptitude for learning certain skills, but nobody has natural
abilities. Abilities are skills. Skills are learned and then improved upon every day.
Think about Michael Jordan - possibly the most
talented professional athlete ever. As a sophomore, Jordan was cut from his high school basketball
team. That disappointment led Jordan to taking action to improve his skills - because he
wanted it.
That's the formula for talent: Talent = Desire + Action. The formula applies to
everything - including music and guitar.
I started playing piano when I was was 7 years
old, but I never got very good. My mom wanted me to take piano lessons - I didn't have the
desire.
When I was 13, I had the desire to play guitar and I took action to
improve my level of skill every day.
Talent = Desire +
Action.
If you have the desire to play acoustic guitar, and
are willing to take action, then you have the talent.
"I don't have time to learn how
to play acoustic guitar..."
Okay, I understand that people are busy. I certainly don't
want to sound rude, but I need you to ask yourself a few questions and give yourself some honest
answers. Do you really want to play guitar? Remember, desire is half of the talent equation.
Did you watch TV today? Did you update Facebook?
Seriously. You can make time. Give it 20 to 30 minutes
a day and you'll progress.
"Learning to play a musical instrument is too
hard..."
So you're probably wondering what the heck that's supposed to
mean. It just means that whether playing guitar is simple or complex depends on each student's
individual goals. What do you want to play?
Do you want to strum Neil Young covers in an acoustic duo.
Pretty simple (and fun, too!).
Want to create your own solo guitar arrangements with lots of
tasty jazz voice leading? That's more complex.
But either way, it's still not hard. More complex simply
means you'll need to develop more skills - none of which are any harder than driving a car.
"I don't know how to read
music..."
Honestly, I don't think reading
standard notation is much different from reading TAB. It's really just what you're used to.
However, you don't need to read standard notation to understand music or guitar. So I'm not forcing
standard notation on anyone.
In fact, I think that the
visualization of musical relationships on the fretboard is very important. That's why in addition to
video and TAB, each AcousticGuitarSchool acoustic guitar lesson includes the entire lesson presented in
fretboard diagrams.
For those that want to learn to read
standard notation, there will be an entirely optional series of lessons and exercises on the
subject.
"I don't have the patience for complicated music
theory..."
Organic chemistry is complicated. Music is 12 tones and
the harmonic and melodic relationships between them. Plus, you don't need to know everything there is
to know about music theory to be a good musician.
Always remember that music comes first and theoretical analysis is
the afterthought. Again, how deeply you choose to dive into music theory is up to you and depends on
your individual goals.
AcousticGuitarSchool.com provides enough instruction in theory and
ear training to allow you to label and recognize harmonic and melodic relationships between the 12
tones. This will enable you to truly "play by ear" (something many programs promise, but few deliver)
and help you compose your own music if you'd like to.
"Guitar
lessons are too expensive..."
The average fee for guitar lessons in my area is $25 - $35 per half-hour. (Check here, here, or here to see for yourself.) I know some teachers that
charge $80 to $100 per hour for private lessons.
If you were to take private lessons from me, the fee would be $65 per hour (I don't think enough
can be accomplished in a half-hour to make the lesson worth it, so I only offer hour lessons).
Students must commit to blocks of four lessons with the entire $260 payable in advance.
This policy is designed to prevent students from reserving lesson time, but then not showing
up for their lesson.
Now I realize that this can get really
expensive. Especially for students who want to progress quickly and take a lesson every
week.
However, the alternative is AcousticGuitarSchool.com - where my online students get the same effective,
quality instruction that I have delivered in my face-to-face, private lessons since 1993. The difference
is, instead of $65 per hour, AcousticGuitarSchool.com costs only
$27 per month.
And, for a limited time only, I am offering AcousticGuitarSchool.com membership for
only $17 per month! With new lessons being assigned every week, that comes out to less than $4 per
lesson - That's less than the average Starbucks purchase!
Even if you took a half-hour private lesson each week for $25, the savings over a year is
impressive!
52 weeks x $25 per week = $1,300 for
private lessons
12 months x $17 per month = $204 for
AcousticGuitarSchool.com
Factor in how slow and inefficient half hour
private lessons make the learning process, and you really can save thousands of dollars!
"I've tried to learn guitar online, but it just doesn't come
together..."
I'm 100% confident that the
AcousticGuitarSchool.com acoustic guitar lessons are truly the best guitar lessons available
online. I'm unaware of any other guitar program or home study course that teaches complete
musicianship as applied to the acoustic guitar.
